Review: Beko DHY7340W Heat Pump Tumble Dryer

“Winter is coming”, to coin Jon Snow. With dark afternoons and cold days looming, we are all looking for an easy way to dry our clothes on those gloomy days when line-drying just isn’t an option. Enter the Beko DHY7340W Heat Pump tumble dryer.

Most new homes these days tend to be designed with compact living in mind. This little Beko beauty packs a lot into its slim, stylish frame, measuring 84.6cm in height, 59.5cm in width and only 54cm in depth. It’s this slim depth will allow you to install it into a tighter place.

Despite the sleek dimensions, it still packs a sizable 7kg load and a decent size porthole in the front to be able to load and unload the machine with ease. It also has a reverse action drum if you’re tired of unloading messy heaps of laundry. This reverse action drum helps to reduce creasing by separating your garments as they’re drying. Who doesn’t love the idea of less ironing?!

Setup of the dryer is really easy, as it is just plug and play, with only the power lead to plug in. You do have the option with this machine, however, to turn it into a vented machine using the included vent pipe instead of keeping the condenser design. Just run the pipe out of a window or into a sink to drain the water away.

Remember the bad old days of having to guess how long to put your drying into the machine for? Well, those days are behind us thankfully, as using the DHY7340W is simplicity itself thanks to its sensor drying technology. This wonderful technology lets you simply ‘tell’ the machine what you are putting into it and it does all the work from there. This will also care for your clothing better as the machine will stop when it reaches the optimal drying level for your clothes. You do still have the option of a 30 min or 45 min cycle if you still want to go old school though. When it is done with your chosen cycle, it will give you a friendly buzz to let you know your clothes are ready.

Whilst all of these features are there to make your life that bit easier, this dryer has an ace up its sleeve being part of Beko’s EcoSmart range of dryers. With standard vented or condenser machines, you will find that a B energy rating is about as good as it gets. The DHY7340W however delivers its knockout punch with its A++ energy rating! This could make a considerable difference to your energy bills where it can cost as little as half to run compared to standard vented or condenser machines. An example of this is comparing it to a similar 7kg condenser dryer; running both 4 times a week with an energy cost of 15.74p per KWH. The similar model will cost £761 to run whereas the DHY7340W will cost a mere £303. That’s a saving of £458! That means this machine will pay for itself – and more than £100 in your pocket, too!

The remarkable technology that allows this is called heat pump and works by using lower temperatures and reusing hot air. This is both safer as you won’t have to handle piping hot clothing when pulling it out of the machine as well as it being better for your clothes. Alongside running at cooler temperatures, this machine also has an Auto Cool down phase which blows cool air into the drum just before the cycle ends.

Are worries about creasing your clothes (thereby creating more ironing) stopping you from using a tumble dryer? Well, worry no more as the WHY7340W has an Automatic Anti-creasing function which is perfect for those days when you can’t unload your laundry right away. The automatic anti-creasing function rotates the drum periodically for up to 2 hours after a cycle has finished, separating your laundry to minimise creases.

Got any special loads you need to dry? The Beko has you covered with its special care programmes. Whether you’re drying delicates, shirts, baby clothes or jeans, there’s a drying cycle to suit all your needs with a wide range of choice of special care programmes.

Maintaining this machine is very easy; the normal in-drum filter should be cleaned for each use, the filter in front of the heat exchanger only needs cleaning every 5 loads and the water bottle to empty. This makes it much easier to maintain compared to a condenser machine where you need to clean the heat exchanger unit as well.
