Review: Dyson DC54i Cylinder Vacuum Cleaner

Guest blog by Jordan

Looking for a vacuum cleaner with no bags, no filter maintenance or replacement costs and no loss of suction? Then look no further than the Dyson DC54i.

The innovative technology that enables Dyson to boast their best cylinder vacuum to date is certainly worth looking into further if you’re in the market for a new vacuum cleaner anytime soon.

How does it work? Dyson Cinetic technology explained – With Dyson’s Cinetic technology, expensive running costs are eliminated, offering a vast saving over alternative bagged models. In fact, a quick calculation on the Dyson website suggests a saving of £499.90 over 10 years, based on a monthly bag change at £2.50 a time and an annual filter replacement at £19.99.

DC54i-2Basically, Dyson have incorporated 54 individual rubber-tipped cones which cleverly separate dust particles efficiently – without the need for a filter. In turn, this stops the machine from clogging with dirt and ensures there is completely no loss of suction, regardless of how full the dust container is, or how old the machine becomes.

This continual suction is tested strenuously to replicate the average use over 10 years.

Performance, manoeuvrability and design – The Dyson DC54i continues the trend of the ‘Ball’ design, which has become commonplace now throughout the Dyson range. The motor, electronics and retractable power cable are all housed within the ball. This aids a low centre of gravity and enables the cleaner to manoeuvre very easily while maintaining stability. Dyson Ball cylinders also have a central steering mechanism which means they will follow accurately rather than erratically.

DC54i-1Turning attention to the plethora of floor heads and attachments now, and upon unboxing this model is certainly not short of solutions for even eventuality. Included in the box are:
• A Carbon Fibre Turbine Head
• A Tangle-Free Turbine Tool
• A Dual Mode Floor Tool
• A Combination Tool (Crevice Nozzle and Dusting Brush)

The carbon fibre head is yet another intuitive and unique feature of the DC54i. Traditional floor heads have nylon bristles and whilst these can perform well on carpet, they are less effective on hard floors. The anti-static nature of the carbon fibre filaments as well as stiffer nylon bristles in the Dyson turbine head mean even the finest dust is picked up from all floor types. There is also no need to adjust anything when transferring your attention from hard floor to carpet.

DC54i-youtubeMoving focus now onto the normally messy task of emptying the dust container… Thankfully, due to the large two litre dust bin on the DC54i this mundane necessity is reduced, however when the time does come, it couldn’t be simpler. The release button located on top frees the container, allowing you to remove it with ease. While holding over the kitchen bin, just a press of the red release button will drop all that compressed dust straight in.

In Conclusion – On the whole I was very impressed with many elements of the DC54i, and while running it around I was amazed at how much dust it picked up despite our daily vacuuming ritual.

The Cinetic technology is certainly spectacular and offers a hassle-free economical solution for the already well renowned Dyson brand.

With options to buy or rent Dyson vacuums available, why not pop down to your local store for a demonstration?
