Happy Halloween at Hughes

This week we’ve got some bewitching bargains and devilish deals available!  Love it or hate it, Halloween is increasing in popularity and is now the third most popular event (after Christmas and Easter) in the UK calendar.  Whilst we still have some way to go to get quite as involved as most Americans do, there can be little denying we’re swiftly becoming a happy Halloweening nation.  Although the exact origins of modern day Halloween are unclear, we know for sure that Halloween is on the eve of a major Catholic festival, All Saints (1st November) and the eve of the pagan Celtic festival known as Samhain.  Nowadays, it is generally thought that Halloween originated as a pagan Celtic festival of the dead related to the Irish and Scottish Samhain, but there is no evidence that it was connected with the dead in pre-Christian times.

The traditions we associate with Halloween are Jack-o’-lanterns, apple-bobbing and trick-or-treating and this week I’ll be trying out all three, whilst endeavouring to explain to my 2-and-a-bit and 3-and-a-lot year olds exactly what the heck Mummy is doing.  I will, of course, keep you updated and also bring you Halloween-themed crafts, party ideas, recipes and fun stuff on our Facebook page.

Many of our stores are getting into the spirit (I meant to do that) of Halloween with some fangtastic window displays.  Check out the spooktacular window displays and Tweet your support @HughesDirect with the #HughesHalloween hashtag or chat to us on Facebook.  The best display (as voted for by the public and our roving management team) will win £250 for their chosen charity!  I’ve already seen fantastic displays from local Hughes stores in Newmarket, Wisbech, Spalding, Southwold, Felixstowe, Stowmarket, Beccles, Sudbury, Dovercourt, Bury St Edmunds, Diss, North Walsham, Wymondham and Dereham, so pop to your local store and make your vote count!  And remember… ghosts aren’t real (or are they?!)
