Mick’s Inspirational Journey raises vital funds for Macmillan

Mick Cycle ride

Sam and the team at our Haverhill branch have given us a great update from a story we brought you back in April about a well known Haverhill man and long-time customer of Hughes, Mick Pilling.

Mick had previously beaten head and neck cancer into remission but was once more battling cancer, in the form of bowel cancer.  Rather than focus solely on himself, Mick decided to undertake – for the third time – the London to Paris bike ride to raise much needed funds for Macmillan. Mick started Chemotherapy in April and was given the medical go ahead for the ride.

It’s a grueling ride, covering nearly 500km in just four days, taking on strenuous hill-climbs as well as all that time in the saddle!  That’s tough enough for anyone but Mick’s fighting cancer and despite his energy and youthful outlook is actually over 60!  In the harsh heat of early July, Mick and his team completed the 500km ride to Paris from London. Mick raised over £2,000 on his Just Giving page on a £1,600 target. Between Mick & his three fellow riders (pictured above, celebrating the finish) more than £6,500 was raised.

Sam and the team were happy to support and donate to this great fund and even managed an impressive 2nd place in the attended the Costa coffee quiz night and it was a huge success! We donated a Karcher K2 pressure washer as a raffle prize & other local businesses also donated prizes, ranging from vouchers to cameras & satnavs. Everyone who attended had a great evening.

To help Mick & Macmillan improve the lives of people affected by cancer you can still donate on Mick’s Just Giving page here.
