Review: Bosch TDS3511GB 2400W Steam Generator Iron

Guest blog by Griff.

Do you hate ironing? Do you find irons too heavy to use? Do you hate refilling irons numerous times during the process? You’re not alone, yet these are all problems and worries that can be alleviated by getting rid of your traditional iron and replacing it with a steam generator iron.

One fine example of just such chore-breaking items is the Bosch TDS3511GB. It is the starting model in the Bosch steam-gen range and as such sits at a comfortable price and does not overwhelm with lots of buttons, dials and gizmo’s.

The Bosch TDS3511GB is easy to set up. The tank on the front of the main body can either be filled while attached, or simply removed and taken over to the sink to fill. As it never heats the water in the tank directly it will never be a danger and if you really have a pile of ironing resembling Mount Everest it can be refilled without stopping your ironing or moving the iron.

tds3-2So, now that your tank is full and you are ready to start ironing, what do you need to do? Set steam levels? Adjust pressures? Select clothing types? Or any other confusing procedures? Nope. Press the big red button on the body of the generator to start, then adjust the temperature dial on the iron as you would any regular iron. Easy.

That isn’t the only thing that is easy with the Bosch TDS3511GB. Removing creases? Easy. Powering through baskets full of clothes? Easy. Removing heavy creases? Easy.

With the higher steam rate you get from this steam generator (110g/min – more than double the average of a regular iron) creases stand no chance. The 1.4L water tank is roughly four times the average size on a traditional iron; it feels like it steams forever. The iron head is incredibly light, thanks to all the heavy steam production and water storage being in the base not the head, and it’s not long until I realise that ironing has become less of a chore and, dare I say, even enjoyable!

boschtds3-3As far as maintenance is concerned there is little of it. The head of the iron has a CeraniumGlissee soleplate designed to reduce marking and increase gliding on fabric. The soleplate design means you don’t have to push as hard and buttons and zips are less likely to damage it.

The Bosch TDS3511GB is designed to work predominantly on tap water. Bosch does recommend a mix of tap and distilled water for hard water areas, such as East Anglia. An easy solution to this is using simple anti-scale water softener products like this from Appliance Doctor; this may also help prolong the life of your appliance.

So, in conclusion the Bosch TDS3511GB is a great little product. Easy to use, easy to maintain. Powerful enough to breeze through tough ironing, while making the work easy to do with minimum refilling and a light head means you won’t be getting a workout from your ironing.
