Review: Dolce Gusto® Coffee Machine

Guest blog by Chris Shelton

Are you a coffee drinker? Occasionally in need of a quick caffeine fix? If you like simplicity and NESCAFÉ® then this may be the machine for you (hey, George Clooney does!)…

I spent a lot of time finding out the right machine for the type of coffee I enjoyed to drink, and to me that is the most important bit. Purchase the machine that can make the coffee the exact way you like it – if it does a few more things then that’s a bonus, but fundamentally it’s coffee type plus drink type above all.

I decided to choose the De’Longhi EDG466S, as it ticked all the boxes and ensured an accurate drink each time. Unlike many manual machines which solely leave it up to the user and have a tendency of getting a different tasting drink each time – meaning you have to also wait and watch it dispense. On the De’Longhi you have the joy of avoiding all of that!

Customise your coffee with Genio® Play & Select – the playful yet powerful NESCAFÉ® Dolce Gusto® coffee customiser. Simply scroll the mouse wheel or follow the
dolce gusto play&selectrecommended dosage on the pods, to effortlessly create hot drinks and coffee that are tailor-made for your tastebuds! It has a maximum 15 bar pump pressure delivering the golden crema on top of your coffee, a true sign of coffee shop quality. With its compact design, it is the espresso maker for coffee lovers big on taste and short on space. It’s very easy to clean and has fast heat up. The coffee grinds stay in the pods so there is no mess, no fuss. There’s a wide variety of drinks available from Americanos and Espressos, to frothy Lattes and hot chocolates, as well as cold varieties.

I found my coffee tastebuds had changed over the years and despite originally purchasing a Tassimo, I gradually fell out of love with the taste of the coffee that was available for that particular machine. I was lucky enough to have a taster of the coffee available from this NESCAFÉ® machine whilst visiting a Hughes branch where there was one on demo.

Seeing how similar this machine was to use in comparison to what I was used to and how you can customise to your taste, I was very intrigued to see if this coffee would re-ignite my tastebuds!

The drink I tried was a Caramel Latte Macchiato… I was not disappointed, WOW.

To make my drink was easy; simply put the cup under the dispenser, look at how much bar to set the water to on the first capsule (which is always the milk one if it has milk!) using the joystick on top by pushing back or forward, put the capsule in the pod holder and into the machine, push the joystick over to the right for hot drink (left if it was a cold type like a Cappuccino Ice) and wait until it finishes dispensing, it will automatically stop for you too.

Having had mine a few weeks now I’ve had the opportunity to try out a few more drink types and I have been astonished by the wide choice available. I have also invested in a pod holder to store my favourites ready for quick use. I chose the stainless steel rotating vertical type that holds 32 capsules, it is looking great on my worktop – but there’s a wide range to suit everyone!

This addition to our kitchen has given more space on the worktop and made coffee enjoyable again. I tend to use the online shop from Dolce Gusto as they offer 16 exclusive online only drinks, they’re the same price as the supermarkets and offer free delivery on orders over 4 boxes!

Before rushing into the first machine you think is a bargain, I thoroughly recommend taking the time to talk to someone who has experience with a few coffee machines and hopefully save you the heartache of getting it wrong.

Come and try one in your local Hughes branch today and perhaps you too could be inspired by change.
