Review: Hostess HM350A Milk Frother/Hot Chocolate Maker

Guest blog by Andy

I am a big fan of hot chocolate (the drink, not the band), particularly in winter. No matter how cold it is outside, a good quality hot chocolate will warm me up. My colleagues know I have a penchant for a really good quality hot chocolate so suggested I should try the Hostess HM350A Milk Frother/Hot Chocolate Maker. I had previously considered purchasing a Tassimo or Dolce Gusto Machine but since I don’t drink coffee or tea I wouldn’t really get the full benefit of one of those fantastic machines. Perhaps they were on to a great idea…

I had a quick look at the available models. When making hot chocolate with the Hostess HM350A you get 350ml, which is enough for 2 cups, one for me and one for my partner. The slightly cheaper model (HM250SS) however, with the smaller capacity, is perfect for anyone who wants to make single drinks.

I bought the HM350A and all but sprinted home, stopping only to buy a bar (or two) of chocolate and some milk. Once home, I had a read of the instructions and set about making my own hot chocolate. I was amazed at being able to make hot chocolate at home with just a chocolate bar and some milk instead of some of the (often terrible) powder chocolate drinks you can normally get from the supermarkets.

I tried two to start off with: the first one I put a Dairy Milk bar in with some milk, which was really creamy, but not the most chocolatey, so next (in the interest of testing, you understand) I tried a Bournville Dark Chocolate bar. I struggle to describe how nice it tasted but it was like drinking a luxury hot chocolate from a super posh drinks shop, but at home! Think of the possibilities: Galaxy hot chocolate, Malteser hot choc, Hotel Chocolat salted caramel hot chocolate, 95% cocoa & chilli hot chocolate… The only limit is your imagination (and what the corner shop has in!)

It has three settings to use, one is a cold setting (for milkshake powders and so on) and the other two are both heated; one for powdered hot chocolate, but the final one for solid chocolate – I think you can guess which one I used the most.

If you are a fan of hot chocolate (especially at this time of the year) then you need this in your life! What better Valentine’s gift for the (chocolate) lover in your life? Chocolate heaven.
