Review: Kidde Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarms

Guest blog by Chris

I recently went to purchased a new smoke alarm and came across the home safety pack from Kidde which included a carbon monoxide detector alarm as well. After recent cases on the news of people suffering from carbon monoxide (CO) related issues this prompted me to get a product to protect my family.

I carefully researched what brands come recommended and it was easy to see that Kidde was by far the one of the most popular and recognised brands for home detection.

The smoke alarm (I9040) is a compact 4 inch battery powered smoke detector for use where space is limited. It provides an early warning signal to you and your family in the event of a fire hazard. It runs on a 9v battery that provides continuous protection even during a power outage and makes installation easy as there is no wiring required. This alarm uses ionization sensing technology, which can detect invisible fire particles (associated with flaming fires) sooner than photoelectric alarms. It also has a low battery warning chirp that alerts you to change the battery when required (I’m sure this feature is programmed to alert you when you’re asleep!).

The carbon monoxide detector (5CO) is a compact and lightweight battery powered CO alarm and provides essential protection against the dangers of deadly carbon monoxide and provides continuous monitoring of CO levels. It’s simple to install and the alarm has to be more than 2 metres from fuel burning appliances, and ideally no more than 4 metres away. Keep it away from draughts, such as doors and windows and do not wall-mount within 30cm of the ceiling as this is a “dead air” space. If free-standing, the unit should be placed no more than 1 metre from the ground.

It has clear LED indicators to show it’s working correctly and a test button to regularly check it, and even tells you when to replace it.

Dimensions: 126 x 72 x 35mm / Weight: 115g / Warranty: 7 years

It’s official, I can now sleep a little easier at night (as long as the kids sleep!) knowing that we will be protected from both fire, smoke and carbon monoxide, the only thing I will diarise is to change the battery once a year!
