Review: Samsung RB29FWRNDSA Fridge Freezer in Silver

Guest blog by Wayne.

In warmer weather you tend to find that fridge freezers have to work that bit harder and if there’s ever going to be a time to fail, a hot spell usually does it. With that in mind, what better time to review the well-designed Samsung RB29FWRNDSA fridge freezer.

Stylishly finished in dark silver it boasts clean lines and a few handy space-saving features. The handles are recessed into the unit so no more dents to nearby furniture and kitchen units from protruding grab handles. Thanks to the new hinge system the door will never need a wider space than the actual width of the appliance (595mm). Even if you’re only opening the doors only to a 90 degree angle the drawers can still be fully opened. This ends the need to ever have the doors reversed; although this is a relatively easy job to perform, who wants to have to mess about doing that?

The RB29FWRNDSA uses a digital inverter compressor, which unlike most compressors that are either on or off, this has 5 different moving cycles. The cycles are based on usage patterns and humidity levels within the fridge freezer; this results in a more consistent temperature. It also makes the appliance quieter, boasting a noise level of only 39dBA, lower than many other brands, and makes it more efficient, reducing energy usage. It also decreases the stress on the compressor which it why Samsung has put a 10 year warranty on this part.

rb29fwrndsa-2The fridge uses the new Samsung Top LED bulb which shines brighter than the LED bulb they previously used, illuminating the whole fridge’s total capacity of 190 litres with ease. It consists of 1 large salad draw, 2 standard shelves made from tempered glass and – my personal favourite feature – the easy slide shelf. This shelf is built on rolling hinges so that it glides forward allowing you to reach items at the back of the shelf without knocking over items which are at the front – great for reaching the jar that you need which is always at the back of the shelf.

The fridge has a handy two bottle rack, useful for soft drink or for cooling your wine. For instant cold water there is a non-plumbed in water dispenser, which is inset in the front of the fridge door. The water dispenser has a convenient child lock to stop little fingers pressing the dispenser and causing accidents / localised flooding. Again with thoughtful design, the 4.5 litre tank is set higher in the fridge and is mounted landscape, maximising the amount of door shelf space. These shelves, Samsung which have dubbed “Big Guard”, are deeper than conventional shelves, so you can easily store big bottles of milk and fruit juice.

rb29fwrndsa-3Upon getting the appliance home, you just put the fridge freezer in place and must ensure it is level, adjusting the front feet if needed. The unit only needs to rest for an hour before turning the power on, then you turn it onto the coldest setting where it should reach temperate within a few hours. The controls for the settings are found inside the fridge at the top where the door closes. The temperature ranges are from 1-7 degrees, with the default temperature being 3 degrees in the fridge. The freezer can range between -15 and -23 degrees with -19 degrees automatically being selected unless changed. The fridge compartment can always be deactivated when going away on holiday with the useful “vacation mode” which will keep the freezer running and saves you using any unnecessary energy. And for those like me, the RB29FWRNDSA has a door alarm to alert you when the door hasn’t been closed properly, thereby saving any food from spoiling.

The freezer has a capacity of 98 litres which is spread over 3 large drawers called the “full open box”. The larger opening of these drawers vs. conventional drawers allows for better organisation and makes bulky items a breeze to remove thanks to the box extending out all the way – and of course not forgetting that these can happen even with the door opened to only 90 degrees.

You will never have to defrost again due to Samsung’s True No Frost system that eliminates frost and icy build-ups ,which also keeps perishable goods fresh and nutritious. The True No Frost puts less demands on the energy needs to help achieve the A+ energy rating using only 272kWh/Year.

All in all this is a very well thought out appliance and I’m clearly not the only person to think this as Which? have awarded Samsung a Best Buy achievement for this model.
