Review: Sony WD6 Series Smart Full HD LED TV

Guest blog by Oliver

For their range of 2016 television sets Sony has provided yet again another array of great quality, high performing machines. I am going to tell you about this year’s 6 Series sets. The WD6 televisions boast a good selection of new technologies, providing a wonderful audio-visual experience whilst retaining a level of simplicity for all users.

The 6 series sets are available in sizes of 32”, 40” and 48”. The 32” set provides a HD-ready resolution, which on this screen provides a great picture which minimal pixilation. The 40” and 48” however, give us a Full-HD screen, meaning Blu-ray and other HD content will come across fantastically.

Let’s start with the aesthetics of the TV. The sleek open-foot design stands strong under the slim-bodied television, made of a sturdy plastic coated in a brushed steel finish which feeds into the thin bezel seamlessly. This premium style lacks no confidence and sits well in many styles of room. The stand itself is not for looks alone, as at the back, the cables from the rear of the set can be fed down the legs of the stand. This hides the leads to create a practical way of keeping a much cleaner, tangle free set-up.

Taking things back to basics, it is important to know how well the television does what it was invented to do… watch television. Freeview HD comes as standard with these sets, broadcasting the channels you know and love. Spread across an easy to understand TV guide, it allows you to scroll through current programming as well as future programming, giving information about each show as it goes.

As for visual performance, the television runs on the powerful X-Reality Pro Engine; this allows you to enjoy fantastic colour and quality, no matter the source of on-screen content. Whether it is videos from USB playback or even streaming from the television’s smart services, the engine will run true and constant to make sure whatever you’re watching is running at its highest capacity.

Although the 6 Series sets do not run on the Android operating system, you will not find yourself with a lack of internet services and applications. Connect the television wirelessly to your internet router and enjoy all the content available, without the necessity for additional equipment. Providing not only the standard BBC iPlayer and Channel 5 On Demand, the sets additional services can be found through the Opera TV store, ranging with content from casual games through to video streaming services and lifestyle apps, the simplicity and layout of this service allows anyone to understand and enjoy modern technology without confusion and over-complication.

There are many simple additional features that have been implemented into these sets. This set has the ability to not only have playback through USB, allowing you to share pictures and videos over a larger screen size, but now also allows USB recording, meaning that your favourite shows can be recorded directly from the set straight to a USB or external hard-drive without the need for an additional VHS, DVD or hard-drive recorder.

wd6-youtubeThe remote that comes with the set shows a similar appearance to that of the Sony televisions of last year; the phrase “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” springs to mind. The remote is simple to navigate and easy to use for all ages. As opposed to stamping the buttons with symbols and shapes in hope you’d figure out what they meant by trial and error, Sony takes a much simpler approach by simply writing the function of the button on the button. Whether you’re scrolling through the TV guide, searching through internet services or customising the settings to your preferred viewing experience, all will be quick and easy with the simple layout of the remote in hand.

The WD6 series televisions are looking to be a strong contender for this year’s great all-round family living room set, with content and services for all people of all ages and levels of experience with new technology. Sony have put together many aspects that create a great TV and have come up with this aesthetic, practical and simplistic television, an excellent choice for anybody looking to move into the 21st century, without jumping in too deep.
