plural noun: First World problems

A relatively trivial or minor problem or frustration (implying a contrast with serious problems such as those that may be experienced in the developing world).
“it’s a First World problem, but still if you’re staying at a 5-star resort you expect some decent service”

Now, I’m aware of the term First World Problem – and I am guilty of occasionally complaining about entirely petty things (no scented loo roll, non-foaming hand wash, a distinct lack of supermarket fillet steak etc) but there are three things that I hold fundamental to this house and that I do NOT think are ‘First World Problems’:

1. Kitchen roll

2. Sat nav

3. A dishwasher

You see, there’s just no way that this household could function without these three things.  In the case of the second, I imagine many a heated exchange has been avoided (although His Nibs does like to argue with the sat nav: “Why have you sent me this way, you stupid thing”) and with the first, I have saved carpets, the side of a sofa and created many “wonderful” creatures and pot holders.  The dishwasher, however, is what I now term a necessity.  Four people in this house, 3 meals a day, 7 days a week… That’s 84 lots of serving up (be it pack up in a box or a plate or bowl), plus cutlery, glasses and cups. Oh and I LOVE to cook but I’m one of those folk who love any excuse to deploy every utensil, pan and gadget going.  Our kitchen genuinely looks like a science experiment has gone disastrously wrong when it comes to a big meal.  The idea of having to hand wash that lot fills both His Nibs and I with such dread that we are always keen to find out the latest innovations in dishwasher design and technology. The Hotpoint EcoTech range has certainly caught our eye with its great features:-

• Zone Wash – achieve 30% extra cleaning power than a standard Intensive Cycle. Simply select the Intensive Cycle with Zone Wash and choose which basket to wash in for a perfect cleaning performance.

• Flexipower – variable pressure motor combined with advanced electronic controls to guarantee optimal regulation of water, resulting in the best cleaning.

• A++ Energy Rating and Eco wash programming – enjoy great results at a lower cost to the planet and your home.

• 14 Place Settings, 8 Washing Programmes and a 24 hour delay timer – the perfect combination for stress-free and versatile cleaning.

• Super Silent motor – ensure minimum sound disturbance you and your family.

Sadly, there’s still no judging function, to declare who loads it best (seriously, it’s me, although I wonder how much of that is His Nibs purposely putting the big pans in the top rack) but there can be no doubt, the EcoTech range is utterly fantastic.  But don’t just take our word for it, view our Hotpoint dishwasher range online or visit your local Hughes store and request a demonstration!
