Review: Bosch WAN28201GB 8kg Washing Machine

Guest Blog by Robyn

“Bish, bash, bosh” is a uniquely British term, meaning the completion of a task with efficiency. When we asked Robyn, our guest reviewer, to review the Bosch WAN28201GB washing machine, she loved it so much that she’s renamed the phrase “Bish, bash, Bosch!” Read on to find out what’s got Robyn in a spin.

The Bosch brand is still one of the market leaders and for good reason. Quality is not compromised, usability is simple and they represent great quality at a great price. In a world where there are literally thousands of washing machines on the market, how do you choose a new machine for your home?Ideally, you could look for a slightly bigger-than-average drum size. An 8kg load capacity will take around 40 T-shirts, so you won’t need to do load every night. A nice fast spin speed of 1400 rpm will get a lot of water knocked out of your laundry, so it will need less time on the washing line, covering radiators or in the tumble dryer.

Personally, I like to look for mid-range items, not too cheap and simple and not so expensive and complicated that I’m put off even trying to use it. With this in mind, I happened upon the classy looking, mid-priced, good quality Bosch WAN28201GB washing machine.

This great machine has some really useful features. You are not stuck with set programmes which invariably result in you using only one programme for everything. With this versatile control pad you can create your own favourite settings.

My favourite is the ‘Mixed Load’. With this, I can half-fill the machine with all sorts of items of clothing from around the house and it’s all done in in 1hour and 3 minutes. I can hit the ‘VarioPerfect ™’ button and that will knock off 18 mins and I can choose my spin speed and temperature. The same button can do the cycle for a longer duration but be more economical on my water and electricity bill.

Another of my favourites is the duvet setting. The water jets penetrate the thick load with powerful force and is ideal for not just your duvet but for cushions, pillows and garden seat covers too, refreshing them and bringing them back to life.

Something you may not think about is the ‘baffles’ in the drum; these are the bars which toss the laundry from side to side. These are usually clipped or screwed in and can, on occasion, come adrift and damage and tear your clothes – not to mention being a pain (and costly) to repair. In the WAN28201GB they are all part of the drum, moulded from the same sheet of metal with no sharp edges and no way of breaking off… ingenious!

Bosch has a secret weapon too: magnets. Their motor in this machine revolves the drum by magnets instead of brushes so it’s quiet… very quiet; they understandably call this the ‘EcoSilence Drive ™’. The EcoSilence Drive™, operating in conjunction with the night time programme (similar to the mixed load in its spec), give even more economical running when the electricity is cheaper, thereby saving you money again.

Bosch are so confident in the EcoSilence Drive™ that they have given it a 10 year warranty and the whole machine comes with a standard 2 Year manufacturers guarantee.

Water can be expensive but again Bosch has cracked that nut. They have ‘Active Water Plus’.

Once more, it saves you money and manages the water in 3 different ways. Firstly, there is a sensor in the machine that gauges when the fabric is saturated and then stops more water from entering the machine. So, whether you just put a single silk scarf or 10 wooly jumpers in, then the sensor will know how much water is needed. Secondly, the force and speed that the water enters the drum alters according to the programme selected to soak the fabric faster and evenly. And lastly, the design of the drum, the baffles and the holes in the drum all go towards making the water work harder for you, spreading and reusing it in the most efficient way.
