Review: Dolby Atmos

Guest blog by Lauren

Have you ever wondered how to improve the audio experience from your TV?

If so, then you are probably aware of today’s options such as soundbars and sound bases. BUT have you heard about the latest revelation in surround sound? It’s called Dolby Atmos…

The Dolby Atmos system places speakers above the audience, but with more finesse than just shoving a few speakers in the ceiling. The actual Atmos system lets film makers place sound elements in a 3D space. With 5.1 and 7.1 systems, when you want to create the illusion that someone is behind the audience you just direct that sound to the relevant blog template size2speakers. With Atmos, instead of pushing a sound to a particular speaker, it’s pushed to a place in a 3D space. For example, to create the illusion of a helicopter flying overhead the sound engineering doesn’t pick which speaker the sound of the helicopter will come out of. Instead, the engineer picks a point in a 3D space and the Atmos system automatically adjusts the sound coming of the appropriate speaker.

Dolby Atmos renders everything from dialogue to quiet scenes to whirlwind action with astonishing clarity, richness, detail, and depth. It all comes together in sound that excites your senses and inspires your emotions to deliver the full impact of entertainment.

If you are into films, like Daryl and Mike from our Felixstowe Road store, did you know that some of your films could already be in Dolby Atmos? Give your old films a new lease of life and view films you may have recently seen in a completely different way. Daryl &blog template size3 Mike revisited The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Home, The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies and Transformers: Age of Extinction, and say that the Dolby Atmos truly helps to bring the cinema home.

Games can also be in Dolby Atmos, so if you are a game lover like me the new “Star Wars: Battlefront” will be coming to you with the most immersive surround sound yet. It will help you feel like you are actually in the setting of the game. In Star Wars: Battlefront, for instance, you’ll feel like you need to duck as the Y-wings scream overhead on a bombing run, and you’ll hear the thud of laser rocket blasts landing near you.

Here at Hughes we offer a specialised Smart Home service where an engineer can offer you free advice in the comfort of your own home and also assist you with regards to installation. You can drop into any one of your local Hughes stores and request a Dolby Atmos demonstration to be arranged for you, so give it a try – you’ll be impressed!
