Review: Smeg BLF01 50′s Retro Style Food Blender

Guest blog by Jordan.

Continuing the theme of the 50’s retro style from Smeg, the Smeg BLF01PGUK food blender is a worthy addition to a range of high quality products with unique and punchy design.

The body material itself is die-cast aluminium with a premium pastel green gloss finish with the instantly recognisable silver iconic Smeg lettering on both sides, and would certainly compliment any kitchen. With many matching products from Smeg including kettles, toasters and fridge freezers, this would complete any kitchen set, adding a touch of cool glamour and a pop of colour.

On top of its pleasing aesthetics, the BL01PGUK is a powerful blender which will rival any other for performance with an impressive 800w of motor power. This enables the stainless steel double blade to rotate at a maximum revolution count of 18000 per minute. In turn, this means it is suitable for the toughest of blending tasks, including crushing ice and making delicious smoothies.

blf01-2There are 4 speed settings which have a pulse option, in addition to the smoothie and ice pre-set programmes. Another quirky benefit is ‘Soft Start’ which begins by blending at a slower speed to draw foods into the blade, before powering up to full revolution after a few seconds to ensure smooth textures and less bits left over. In addition, Smeg have added a handy self-cleaning feature which can be activated by turning the dial to 1 and using the pulse setting intermittently, so you can blend to your hearts content without worrying about clearing up a load of mess afterwards.

blf01-3The 1.5 litre capacity jug is incredibly robust and is made from Tritan plastic, which translates to great durability, safety and clarity. It also means there is enough space to cram in all your favourite fruits, vegetables and meats (not all at the same time though, hopefully!) A handy little safety feature is that when the jug is removed the blender will automatically shut off.

Smeg have included some other nifty features too, like the convenient cord storage located underneath to wrap the 1 metre long power cable out of the way, should it be nearby to a plug socket. The anti-slip feet will keep it fixed in position – although it’s fair to say that the base is fairly weighty anyway due to the build quality. There is also a motor safety cut-out feature which will trip if it is used too strenuously and is overloaded. The rubber seal at the top of the jug also feels sturdy and will prevent any unwanted spills.

blf01-youtubeIn a market full of juicers, blenders, processors and mixers the Smeg BL01PGUK stands out, and is powerful enough to cope with most tasks required, as well as having a stylishly retro look with some premium features on top. Also, if pastel green just won’t match your current kitchen arrangement, there are other colours to choose from and a whole range of retro products to choose from.
