Review: Sony’s HT-ZF9 Dolby Atmos Soundbar

Sony’s HTZF9 Dolby Atmos soundbar is a long sleek soundbar with a wireless subwoofer. Although it doesn’t actually have any upward-firing speaker drivers, it is still a very competent Dolby Atmos soundbar. It uses its virtual audio processing to truly immerse you into the sound without having the added bulk of extra speakers littering your home set up.

The soundbar measures at one-metre-wide, making it quite long amongst its competitors, however this really helps the sound separation when it comes to films or music in equal measure. It’s important to note that the Sony HT-ZF9 has two HDMI inputs and one ARC (audio return channel) HDMI output, allowing simple one lead connection to your screen (ARC compatibility dependant with your TV model).  Along with that, you have a 3.5mm analogue input, a digital optical input and a USB to really give you the flexibility you need to connect to almost any TV.

In terms of wireless connectivity, both Chromecast and Spotify are integrated for all of your streaming need. This means that it’s not only a superb TV addition, but also a strong contender as your main music speaker.

The HT-ZF9 comes with its own remote, allowing you to switch between inputs but best of all, it allows you to play with the different sound pre-set sub-levels and the virtual s. button. After a while you’ll find your preferred settings and really start to appreciate all this soundbar has to offer.

The overall sound is punchy and dynamic, handling anything you can throw at it without breaking a sweat. When watching films, it does a remarkably good job of throwing the sound around the room. Unfortunately, without the upward facing drivers, the sound overhead is at a minimum. However, this is a worthy sacrifice for how good the soundbar looks underneath your TV.

All in all, for a £500 soundbar with Dolby Atmos, this is a superb choice. The aesthetics, build quality and sound are truly worth considering as a contender for your front room.
