Smart Home Case Study – Lighting and Speakers

Brief

Our client was planning a renovation to convert separate kitchen and dining room areas into an open plan kitchen-diner.  The brief was to provide high-quality audio in this area using the Sonos platform that was installed throughout the rest of their home.  After visiting our showroom, the client was also interested in a smart lighting control system but was not sure whether their budget would allow for it.

Solution

Working from the architectural drawings, we planned to house the electronics for the audio system in the cupboard under the stairs.  This kept the uncluttered look that the client desired but ensured that the electronics could be easily accessible for any future smart home modifications or servicing.  The Audio Control amplifier specified has a uniquely small footprint so it can be housed on a shelf within the cupboard without taking up too much room.  Albeit a small amplifier, the sound quality produced is certainly not compromised, delivering 2 x 100W of high quality power.

A Sonos Connect was also installed into the cupboard so that the client can continue to use the Sonos app and have the new system working in harmony with the Sonos hardware that had been installed previously.

The speakers selected for this project were wall-mounted architectural speakers from Monitor Audio; these were chosen because of their premium audio performance and their minimal aesthetic design.  The speaker grilles can be customised and printed with images from Monitor Audio’s library or any image of the clients choosing.  For this project, it was decided that a plain white frame and grille would give the best finish for the room.

During the smart home installation, we made provision to install smart lighting in the future without disturbances to freshly plastered walls.

Works

Hughes Smart covered all required elements of this project, from creating CAD designs and cable schedules, first- and second-fix of the audio visual system to final commissioning of the project.  Provisions were also made for future television installation for “When the kids take over the living room” (our customer’s quote) and for adding smart lighting.

The client also took advantages of using Hughes as a ‘one-stop shop’ and ordered all of their CDA and Bosch integrated kitchen appliances, Kitchen Aid mixer, Morphy Richards toaster & kettle and Sage coffee machine.
