Learning the art of surfing (on tablets, that is)!

This blog serves as a message to Mary, Eileen, and the many others who attended the Silver Surfer Tablet Training: if you’re reading this then you’ve certainly made me proud!

My name is Lucy and I’m a new starter at Hughes, based in our Ely store. One of my first tasks was to attend the Silver Surfers meetings for four weeks at the Lighthouse church. We add a key aim: get our surfers online and on a tablet.   I’m happy to say that we succeeded in our aims and we now have a group of happy silver surfers!

The first lesson we taught them was how to find out something they didn’t know. Who do you go to when you don’t know something? Google? Siri? Well, we taught them how to question their tablet in order to be able to navigate easily.   Soon au fait with that, we then moved onto the harder stuff, like how to use the App Store, YouTube, Spotify and their settings. By the end of the sessions everyone was up and running, expanding their knowledge and using Google and Siri to lend a helping hand if they got lost.

UnknownHere we see the look on this lovely lady’s face when a key point finally clicked for her: how to use Google. Everybody in the class had this “EUREKA” moment at some point or another and it was lovely to see. It opened up a whole realm of possibilities for them: being able to Skype distant family and friends, ordering gifts online – or even getting help for that last crossword clue!   At the end of the sessions I went round and asked everyone if they had a good time and whether they learned a lot. Mary said “It’s nice to be able to ask questions and not be looked at like you’re stupid”.

Even though the sessions have ended I know that this class of silver surfers will carry on surfing, getting better every day.
