Try Walking In My Shoes Event for St Nicholas Hospice

Try Walking in my shoes

Boots, sandals, flip flops, platforms and brogues in all sizes, colours and shapes helped to raise funds for charity on 4th July.

Hundreds of pairs of shoes have been collected and processed and went on sale in Diss in aid of St Nicholas Hospice Care.

Lesley and Mike Bowen, organisers of the Try Walking in my Shoes shoe sale, have been collecting shoes for months. They set up nine footwear collection points in the Waveney Valley and beyond, making weekly visits to them all.

Lesley said: “Our storage container at Coleman’s Removals was brimming with shoes. We’ve been moved and surprised to receive several large, anonymous donations of new and unused shoes. The largest single donation was from a lady who personally promised us a donation, but passed away before she could make it. Her family gave us 96 pairs of shoes.

“We are so grateful for all the support we have had from businesses, organisations and friends across Diss, which has helped to make this possible.”

Lesley said they were inspired to support the Hospice after visiting it in January.

“If we were not compelled to fundraise for the Hospice before, we were certainly convinced after touring the building,” she said. “We observed at first hand the good work which benefits not only the patients but their families, making each day of living fulfilling, happy and as comfortable as possible. Nothing is too much trouble.”

In addition to hundreds of pair of good quality shoes for sale, there was a tombola and a raffle, among other events.

Miranda McCoy, St Nicholas Hospice Care Community Fundraiser, said: “Thank you to everyone who has helped this event, whether through donating shoes, raffle prizes, or helping with shoe collections, storage or marketing. All the funds raised will help the Hospice to make living with dying better for people facing long-term or life-threatening illnesses and their families.”

St Nicholas Hospice Care works compassionately in the fields of life-threatening illness, death and bereavement.  They provide practical, medical and spiritual support to local people and their families living with an illness that is life threatening; such as cancer, multiple sclerosis, motor neurone disease, heart or lung disease.

The event was held at Diss Methodist Church and Matt and the team at our Diss store were delighted to support the event and provided a TV, which was used to show the BBC “Inside Out” DVD.

We’ll keep you posted on how much was raised for this great cause!
