Review: Asus Transformer Mini T102

Guest blog by Jason

Manufactured from strong but extremely light magnesium-aluminium alloy, the Asus Transformer Mini is incredibly thin and feather-light and features a detachable keyboard. With the keyboard detached, the tablet is just over 8mm thin and weighs a mere 530g! Attaching the keyboard doesn’t add much bulk or weight; it’s still a slender 13.9mm thin and weighs less than 800g, so, no matter what else you’re carrying, you’ll never need to leave your Transformer Mini at home. We set our guest reviewer, Jason, to find out more.

Right out of box, the Asus Transformer Mini T102 2-in-1 laptop is extremely easy to use and there’s little fuss in getting it set up. The tablet comes already connected to the keyboard and there is also a very nice looking stylus that looks and feels extremely professional. Also included is a standard AC adaptor micro-USB charger.

Once unboxed and set up, you can tell that a lot of thought gone into the design just through handling the product; the ergonomic styling feels good in your hands. The tablet itself is very sleek and light and has a 10.1 inch screen with front facing 12MP camera.

There’s one USB 3.0 port, one micro SD slot, a micro USB slot and a micro HDMI for connecting the T102HA to a monitor, TV or projector. The keyboard itself has “proper” keys that feel good when pressed and make for a more enjoyable experience to type with. The keyboard can be detached; it’s extremely easy to do so and even easier to reattach as it pretty much attaches itself with a magnetic snapping motion. The back of the keyboard is finished with a nice suede-like cover which helps grip to most surfaces – especially your lap.

Another clever feature is the fingerprint sensor on the back of the tablet which allows you to unlock your device with your finger. Firstly, you have to click the power button to activate this function. I found this to be rather helpful as you won’t unlock the tablet by mistake; a nice little safeguard against unwittingly doing so.

The Transformer Mini comes with Windows 10 pre-installed so you get the experience of working on a full-sized laptop or desktop. The Intel Atom x5-Z8350 quad-core processor is backed by 4GB of RAM which will allow you to browse the internet, update your Facebook status and run the basic office programs. If gaming is your cup of tea then it will run the basic online games but not the top end titles.

The battery life is very impressive; it will easily last you up to 10 hours so if you are out for the day it should be more than enough to see you through.

Overall, the Transformer Mini is a great piece of kit that ticks a lot of boxes. It’s very stylish, comes with a great keyboard & very slick stylus, it’s extremely easy to use, has a great selection of ports and is excellent value for money. It’s a great lightweight tablet that has excellent battery life, great features and plenty of apps available and offers a great way to access the internet on the go.
