Get your old appliance ready for recycling

A little preparation before we arrive helps make sure everything goes smoothly and your old appliance is ready to be taken away.

Unless you’ve booked a disconnection service, your appliance will need to be fully disconnected before we arrive.

Depending on the appliance, please also make sure it is:

  • Fully defrosted: For fridges, freezers and other appliances that need defrosting
  • Free of water: Where applicable, make sure any remaining water has been drained
  • Completely cool: Ovens and other cooking appliances need to have fully cooled before we arrive

If you’ve booked a disconnection service, you can leave the disconnection to us.

What happens to your old appliance?

Once we’ve taken your old appliance away, we’ll take care of what happens nextIt’ll be taken to our recycling centre in Thetford, ready for the next stage of the recycling process.

Electrical appliances shouldn’t go in your normal household waste. Under the UK’s Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Regulations, electrical products should be collected separately so that materials and components can be recovered, reused or recycled where possible.

You’ll see a crossed-out wheelie bin symbol on many electrical products. This is a reminder that they shouldn’t be disposed of with your household rubbish.

Recycling your old appliance means useful materials and valuable resources can be recovered rather than simply being thrown away. By arranging recycling when you order your replacement from Hughes, you can get your old appliance taken away at the same time as your new one is delivered.
