Washing machine & dishwasher installation
Find out how our washing machine & dishwasher installation works.
Step 1: Delivery & setup
We’ll deliver your new appliance to a room of your choice, unbox it and level the machine.
Step 2: Electrical safety check
Our experts will test your electrical supply and if there’s any issues, we’ll advise you on these.
Please note: this service is not included with installations carried out by our third-party partners.
Step 3: Water connection
Next, we’ll connect your new washing machine or dishwasher to the existing cold-water supply.
If your tap has a plastic ‘Y’ piece, we’ll replace this with a brass one free of charge.
Step 4: Waste connection & positioning
We’ll then connect your appliance to a standard waste outlet such as a standpipe or spigot connection and position it correctly.
Step 5: Power connection
We will connect your appliance to a 13amp electrical outlet. We cannot connect it to an extension lead.
Please note: If your appliance is hard-wired, please let us know in advance.
Step 6: Wi-Fi setup
If your new washing machine or dishwasher is Wi-Fi enabled, we can help connect it during installation. Please make sure you have your Wi-Fi password ready when we arrive, and that the appliance app and account have already been set up, as we’re unable to create accounts on your behalf.
Please note: this service is not included with installations carried out by our third-party partners.
Step 7: Testing & demonstration
We’ll test everything, check for leaks, and show you how to use and maintain your appliance.
Please note: this service is not included with installations carried out by our third-party partners.
Step 8: Clean-up & removal
Once you’re happy, we’ll clear up any packaging and take this away with us, leaving you to enjoy your new washing machine or dishwasher.
Installation services may be carried out by either a Hughes team or one of our trusted installation partners. As the attending team isn't confirmed until your dispatch email is sent the evening before delivery, it's important that you tell us about any special installation requirements when placing your order. This helps us ensure the most suitable team is arranged wherever possible.
Taps & water fittings
- We’ll need a working isolation valve to safely complete your installation. If the isolation valve or surrounding pipework is seized, damaged, leaking, or otherwise unsuitable for connection, we may be unable to complete the installation until the issue has been resolved.
- We can’t install your new appliance if the existing fittings are not suitable for it.
- We cannot fix distressed or inadequate plumbing pipework.
- Our third-party installers are unable to blank off redundant water supplies.
Waste connections
- We won’t connect to a non-standard waste connection or place the waste pipe into areas such as sinks or open drains.
- This includes passing the pipe through exterior walls.
- We won’t connect to a waste outlet that is incomplete, insecure or leaking.
Electrical safety
- Before installation we will conduct a basic polarity and earth loop test on the electrical supply to ensure it is safe and suitable for installation.
- We can’t leave an appliance connected to an extension lead if the plug doesn’t reach the power supply socket.
- We will also not connect the plug into a multi-plug adaptor.
Placement restrictions
- For safety reasons, we can’t place a tumble dryer directly on top of a washing machine without a stacking kit or a suitable shelf.
- We’re unable to place the machine higher than the skirting board height for safety and stability reasons.
- We can’t install into a wet room or some bathrooms.
Safety & location limits
- We can’t connect the new appliance if it puts the installation team or yourself at risk or if the correct safety guidelines cannot be met.
Something to remember!
Most plumbed in products are tested with water in the factory, so don’t be surprised if it's wet inside your new product even before we have connected it.
Be present for delivery
An adult will need to be present for the delivery (someone 18 or older) and we ask that the route to where we are working, as well as the work area, is cleared. Our teams do have to fill in a brief safety assessment for every job and will discuss with you any issues they find.
Allow enough space
Please make sure there is enough space for your new appliance to be installed. If plumbing is inside cupboards, we ask that these are emptied before we arrive, and that pets and small children are kept away from the work area.
Some appliances have large anti-flood valves, so please ensure there is enough space for these to fit properly.
Water supply access
We must be able to isolate the water supply at the point of connection.
Access to connections
We’ll need easy access to all required connections before installation begins.
Please make sure any plumbing and connections are in good working condition, with no leaks or existing issues, to help the installation go as smoothly as possible.
Check connection distances
Please make sure that the water supply, waste outlet and power supply are within 1.5 metres of your new appliance. If the hose doesn't reach the main connection, we can add one extension hose to help resolve certain situations.
Cabinet adjustments
To ensure proper installation, small cutouts in the cabinetry may be needed to safely route the appliance’s hoses and power cord. In some cases, our Installation Team can assist with this service.
Standpipe height
If your waste connection is a standpipe, please ensure that its length is at least 60cm long and its not over 100cm in height from the ground.
Stacking setup
If you'd like your tumble dryer installed above a washing machine, please let us know when booking.
Some third-party installation teams are unable to carry out stacking installations, so we may need to send a specialist team. A suitable stacking kit or shelf will also be required.
Bathroom safety zone
If you are installing the appliance in a bathroom, please make sure it will be in the safe zone. Our team will carry out a dynamic risk assessment to ensure the installation meets all regulations. We will need to follow safety guidelines and wiring zones. This may mean we’re unable to proceed with the installation.
Post-install checks
Please be aware that we may take some photographs of our installations so we can do safety checks afterwards.
Hardwired disconnection?
If your disconnection is being conducted by Hughes’ own team. We’ll be happy to disconnect your washing machine from a hardwired connection. We just ask that you let us know in advance that you’d like us to do this.
Before disconnection
Ensure your old machine is empty and dry. We are unable to disconnect a machine that is not.
Check your fittings
Make sure your existing fittings are suitable for your new appliance. If they’re not, we will not proceed with the disconnection.
Like-for-like replacements only
Only book a disconnection if your new appliance is the same and will be installed in the same place. We only offer this service for ‘like for like’ appliances, where your new machine is installed in the same location.
